聽The 2025 U.S. Product Stewardship Forum concluded last week, marking an extraordinary gathering of thought leaders committed to driving sustainable product management and environmental stewardship into the future. Hosted by the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI), the Forum provided a dynamic environment for in-depth dialogue, strategic planning, and the celebration of remarkable achievements in extended producer responsibility (EPR).

The event鈥檚 discussions were highlighted by compelling stories of impact and leadership, particularly around groundbreaking state efforts and policy innovations. Maryland State Senator Malcolm Augustine energized attendees with powerful insights into the legislative process that led to the enactment of the nation鈥檚 sixth packaging EPR law just last month.

“This process鈥攁nd all those different gates you have to go through鈥攊s set up to make sure the end product truly considers unintended consequences and delivers what’s best for our state,鈥 said Senator Malcolm Augustine during his keynote speech. 鈥淭he most important part of this is that it鈥檚 a process of compromise. It’s a matter of trust, partnership, compromise, and patience. That鈥檚 how we succeeded in Maryland.”

Notable discussions during the Forum included:

  • In-depth exchanges on overcoming practical hurdles in implementing packaging EPR programs, including innovative approaches shared by policymakers and industry leaders.
  • A critical exploration of cutting-edge technologies and collaborative initiatives reshaping battery recycling and ensuring safety and sustainability.
  • Strategic discussions on novel EPR solutions addressing waste from textiles, hazardous household products, medicines, medical sharps, and vapes.
  • At the Forum鈥檚 celebratory event鈥攖he 25th Anniversary Gala鈥擯SI recognized visionary leaders and influential organizations that have consistently driven the national agenda toward sustainability and product stewardship.

The Forum鈥檚 final session, Achieving the End Goal, underscored the importance of broadening our environmental vision beyond traditional solid waste management. Abby Boudouris, Senior Legislative Analyst at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and PSI鈥檚 Board President, delivered a powerful message: 鈥淲e鈥檙e not going to recycle our way to sustainability. Recycling is necessary鈥攂ut not sufficient. We need to take off our solid waste blinders and think creatively about the problems. We need to step back and ask: are we even using the right tools?鈥

This call to action captured the spirit of the Forum鈥攃hallenging stakeholders to embrace upstream solutions and think boldly about the future of product stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility. “The Forum has reaffirmed our collective resolve,” noted PSI Founder and CEO Scott Cassel. “The innovation, enthusiasm, and bold ideas exchanged here set the stage for impactful actions that will significantly advance sustainable materials management. The past 25 years have shown us what we can accomplish together; now we are more determined than ever to tackle the next generation of environmental and economic challenges.”
