The City of Madison Streets Division is happy to announce that they have collected 30,177 pounds of food scraps for composing at three farmers’ market drop-off sites. In 2025, the goal is to collect 40,000 pounds of food scraps for composting. That is approximately the weight of 20 mature bison, which would make for a small (yet mighty) herd.
They have just under 10,000 pounds of scraps to collect to reach this year’s goal. And there are only 7 weeks left in the farmers’ market season. People  can take your scraps for free to one of three neighborhood farmers’ market locations for composting. The sites are the South Madison Farmers’ Market, the Eastside Farmers’ Market, and the Westside Community Market.
Raw fruits and vegetables (and their peelings), corn cobs, coffee grounds, eggshells, and so on are accepted. Free buckets to help carry your scraps to the market can be picked up at the booths.Printed guides or even fun stickers from any of the three market site locations are available.
