In the aftermath of the decision to allow the expansion of the Monarch Hill Landfill, company and county officials are turning their attention to recycling.  The Broward County Solid Waste Authority recently released the results of how residents handle garbage and recycling at home, which included 90 respondents from Coconut Creek out of more than 2,000 total.

The survey is part of the authority’s development of a regional solid waste and recycling master plan. Meanwhile, Waste Management (WM) is moving forward with the construction of a recycling plant in Pembroke Pines, which is expected to open next year.

One of the authority’s goals is to recycle 75% of the more than 9 billion pounds of waste the county produces each year, a big jump from its current rate of about 30%.  Highlights from the survey include: 22% of respondents who rent said they don’t have separate carts for trash and recycling.
