The York County Solid Waste Authority is building a waste transfer station to address a possible need for disposal in the event an agreement can鈥檛 be reached to extend the life of the Modern Landfill in Lower Windsor Township.聽During the regularly scheduled Manchester Township Board of Supervisors meeting on June 10, Doug Jason, representing the YCSWA, approached the board with a final land development plan review for the transfer station. After a lengthy explanation of the need for a transfer station, the final development plan was approved unanimously.
Currently, the incinerator at Black Bridge Road accepts items that can run though the facility that burns trash to produce electricity, but construction debris, such as concrete and plaster, must be taken to Republic Services Modern Landfill in Lower Windsor Township.
As reported in ydr.com in 2021, the landfill, which has been operating in the township since the ’70s, has had four expansions in its nearly 50 years of operation. An expansion proposed at that time would have increased the landfill’s size by 50 percent, expanding eastward into farmland.
