Officials with the Beaufort County Public Works Department unveiled a plan for two mega waste collection sites to be located north and south of the Pamlico River. During a special called commissioners meeting, public works officials presented a conceptual design for two mega waste collection sites. Beaufort County currently has 10 solid waste sites, 5 of which are owned by the county, and 5 others which are leased.
Officials say that out of those 5 collection sites owned, a majority of solid waste is collected at just 3 of those sites including Cherry Run and River Road in Washington, as well as Gray Road in Chocowinity. The proposal for the two mega sites was created as a solution to address a series of challenges, including rising annual costs to operate leased waste collection sites, and the challenge of some sites collecting certain waste materials that others may not.
鈥淲ith those challenges in mind, our public works staff has been working with the board of commissioners over the years to plan a potential solution, and the solution that we鈥檙e working on right now is the construction of two solid waste mega sites, the idea that we鈥檒l have one on the either side of the Pamlico River,鈥 Brandon Tester, Beaufort County鈥檚 Communications Director said. Tester says that right now as the department is still in the beginning stages of planning, there are no plans at this point to consolidate the 10 sites into two mega sites.
