Starting July 15, the Recycle Center will be closed until early August for facility upgrades and new staffing and management. When it reopens, the center will no longer be staffed and operated by the health district, which receives funding from the city but is a separate political entity with its own governing board.

Instead, the Canton Building Department will absorb the Recycling Center鈥檚 operations as part of its growing code enforcement division. Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II said he initiated the change, which came as a surprise to Recycle Center workers who will be laid off, to improve services for residents.

鈥淗ow can we all step up our game more than what we are doing right now and be more efficient?鈥 said Sherer, who also serves as the president of the Canton Board of Health. 鈥淚 really think this is going to be a positive thing.鈥
