The City of Centerville has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered recycling contamination reduction program, aimed at increasing the quality of recyclables collected curbside and enhancing the community鈥檚 environmental impact. Thanks to grant funding from the Montgomery County Solid Waste District, this innovative pilot project equips select City collection trucks with camera-based technology to identify contamination in real time. The AI system analyzes the contents of recycling carts as they are emptied into the truck and flags materials that do not meet local recycling guidelines.

When contamination is detected, residents will receive a personalized postcard with clear guidance on which items are not accepted and tips on how to recycle properly. The goal is to reduce contamination, increase efficiency in processing and promote more effective recycling habits throughout the city. 鈥淩educing contamination in our recycling system lowers processing costs and improves the overall efficiency of our collection,鈥 City Manager Wayne Davis said. 鈥淭his technology allows us to target problem areas, educate residents and make better use of City resources.鈥

Residents are encouraged to review the City鈥檚 Recycling Guide for updated instructions on what is accepted for recycling. Acceptable items include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and tubs, metal cans, glass bottles and cartons: all clean, empty and loose inside the container. Items such as plastic bags, foam packaging, food waste, 鈥渢anglers鈥 like cords or hoses and soiled paper should not be placed in recycling carts. Residents who consistently follow guidelines will help ensure Centerville鈥檚 recycling stream remains clean, efficient and cost-effective.
