The City of Bloomington rolled out its new recycling and waste disposal program this morning.

City residents will no longer have to separate out their recycling, or buy garbage tags for garbage bags.

According to the city鈥檚 website, the new measures are being taken to reduce the, 鈥渉igh number of injuries and subsequent workers compensation costs.鈥

Director of Public Works for the City of Bloomington Adam Wason spoke with WFHB via cell phone, while working to finish up this morning鈥檚 collection. Wason says the modernization of the city鈥檚 sanitation services was necessary to protect workers.

The new waste bins were distributed to eligible households throughout the end of September. The new city-distributed trash and recycling bins come in three different sizes: a 96 gallon bin, a 64 gallon bin, and a 35 gallon bin. Depending on the size of their trash cans, households will pay either $16.60, $10.52, or $6.22 per month.

Wason says this morning鈥檚 pickup was marred by the city鈥檚 internet line being cut Monday morning. Wason says although internet outage created difficulties with regards to customer service, this morning鈥檚 pickup went relatively smoothly.

Residents will have 60 days to switch out their cart preferences before they will have to pay a $50 fee to switch sizes. Bloomington Sanitation Services have announced that charges for trash disposal and bin fees will be accessible on residents鈥 water bills.
