Christmas is a time where we all often indulge ourselves and consume huge amounts of delicious foods, from turkey and all the trimmings to chocolate. But, unfortunately Christmas is also a time of huge food waste.

Food waste is a major problem around the world, and current estimates put global food waste between one-third and one-half of all food that is produced. Households will throw away the equivalent of 4.2 million dinners on Christmas Day,The food we leave on our plates on December 25 adds up to to 263,000 turkeys, 740,000 Christmas puddings and 17.2 million Brussels sprouts, as you can see in 聽latest infographic.

We often end up cooking for 20, even if there鈥檚 just 8 of us! And this means we end up with leftovers that we tend to throw away.聽 It would take the average family nearly 4 days to eat all of their food bought just for Christmas day.

Food waste is not just a moral issue, it鈥檚 an environmental issue too. Food waste has a serious impact on the environment because most of it ends in landfill where it decays and produces the potent greenhouse gas methane. The Waste & Resources Action Programme ()聽claims that 90 per cent of consumers are completely unaware of the amount of food they throw away.
