David Biderman

Although there have, fortunately, been fewer fatal incidents involving solid waste and recycling trucks, equipment, and personnel this summer than in previous years, the consequences of serious and/or fatal collisions is always significant. Thus far in 2025, the industry appears to be improving its overall safety performance compared to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports.

I have provided safety training at numerous solid waste companies in the New York City metropolitan area over the past few months. There is a serious commitment to safety and compliance that was missing in the past, including at small companies.

Waste Advantage intends to help the industry accelerate the current positive safety trends by holding a Safety Webinar Series in the Fall. The series will include an October 9 webinar focused on post-collection issues, and a December 4 webinar focused on collection issues from 2:00 – 3:15pm ET. Nearly 100 people from companies and local governments throughout the U.S. and Canada have already registered for these webinars.

I strongly encourage managers, supervisors, and others interested in learning about new technologies and communication tips that can help you reduce the frequency and severity of fatalities, injuries, and collisions at your organization. It could save someone’s life.
