Noted experts in the field of solid waste and recycling will open the Federation of New York Solid Waste Associations’ Conference and Trade Show at The Sagamore on May 15 through the 18, 2016.
“Strive for Sustainability” is the theme of this year’s conference, which runs through noon on Wednesday, May 18. Seminar topics are a wide-ranging mix, covering emerging issues and technologies (many qualifying for P.E. continuing education credits). Over 100 speakers from across the nation will be presenting the latest on waste and recycling issues, materials management, new technology and recent legislation throughout 30 panels over two and a half days.
In 2016, multiple panels will feature the industry’s hottest topic, organics and composting. The US Composting Council’s Al Rattie will highlight the Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance program, joined by WeCare Organics’s Charles Duprey, who will delve into developing market opportunities for compost. Regulators from the NYSDEC will provide an overview of the state of composting in NY while CEO of Sustainable Generation, a commercial composting and waste conversion company, Scott Woods will discuss scalable composting solutions across the country.
New York City’s Department of Sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia is slated to provide an update on achieving Zero Waste in New York City. Since her appointment to the position in 2014 by Mayor Bill De Blasio, Garcia has focused on sustainability efforts including composting and expanding biodiesel fleets. A seminar Tuesday titled “The Case Against Zero Waste: It’s Ideological Nonsense, Not a Practical Economic, Engineering or Public Policy Objective” is sure to provide an interesting contrast. Another not to miss panel boasts nationally known speakers who will share their thoughts on the politics and practicalities that surround mixed waste processing programs. They will be joined by a panel of technology experts who will provide feedback on the lasts equipment, layouts, volume, and viability issues based upon their research and experience.
