On December 22nd, 2016 the League of American Bicyclists recognized Gallegos Sanitation, Inc (GSI) with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award, joining nearly 1,300 visionary businesses from across the country and 50 businesses in Fort Collins. With the announcement of 42 new and renewing BFBs today, GSI joins a cutting-edge group of 1,265 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. that are transforming the American workplace.
鈥淭he business community鈥檚 investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work,鈥� said Bill Nesper, League Deputy Director for Programs and Operations. 鈥淲e applaud this new round of businesses, including Gallegos Sanitation for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.鈥�
Becoming a bike friendly business has been advantageous for GSI. It has helped to enhance the company culture by increasing the bike amenities for employees and visitors who ride to GSI鈥檚 office, along with helping GSI to connect with partners in their community 鈥� like the local bike shop who provides discounted equipment pricing for GSI staff. 聽Most notably, BFB has also supported Gallegos Sanitation 聽by providing the safety management with enhanced training so they can certify operational staff as Bike Friendly Drivers – thus strengthening the existing safety program.
Tom Clock, GSI Safety Manager said 鈥淚 feel one of the most important tools we can provide our employees is (for them) to be good stewards of the community. GSI operates large trucks that share the road with bicycles. It is important we understand the laws of the road as they are intended to provide safe travels for both vehicles and bicyclists.鈥�
Moving forward, GSI will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the LoAB to become even more bicycle-friendly. Sustainability Coordinator Becca Walkinshaw stated the overall benefit of joining the BFB community is a home-run hit at GSI. 鈥淲hen our employees bike to work or for play, great things happen. We have a better attitude towards life and work, while helping to decrease our carbon footprints, and increases life-satisfaction.鈥�
