The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) is pleased to announce that Ice River Springs Water Co., Inc. has funded a named scholarship for the EREF scholarship program. Fully integrated from water source to the manufacturing of bottles, Ice River Springs is an Ontario-based company that makes bottles, caps and packages, and packages spring water, purified water and distilled water. The company strives to constantly innovate finding new ways to recycle, reduce energy consumption and minimize waste. Ice River Springs is the only beverage company in North America to operate a closed-loop system that reclaims plastic from used containers and produces 100% recycled bottles along with filling and distribution.鈥淭he Ice River Springs Master鈥檚 Scholarship for Sustainability was created to promote recycling, reduce the amount of material being landfilled and decrease the carbon footprint by emphasizing plastics recycling,鈥 said Sandy Gott, Executive Vice President and Co-Owner at Ice River Springs. 鈥淓REF funds the scientific research behind the technology that can make a true environmental impact, and this fits our corporate values.鈥
The eligibility requirements for the Ice River Springs Master鈥檚 Scholarship for Sustainability are as follows:
鈥 Master鈥檚 students enrolled full-time
鈥 Must be enrolled at a Canadian academic institution
鈥 Area of research that relates to recycling, with preference given to applicants exploring the recyclability of plastics, plastic bottles and/or PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic
Interested applicants should complete the online EREF scholarship application available at www.erefdn.org. The 2016 EREF scholarship deadline is May 4, 2016 at 5:00 pm (eastern). The EREF scholarship program awards and recognizes excellence in master鈥檚 and doctoral solid waste management research and education. Existing EREF masters and doctoral awards are also made in memory of Francois Fiessinger, P.E., Ph.D., a graduate of Rutgers University, a founding director of the foundation, and additional scholarships were made possible by the late Robert P. Stearns, P.E., DEE of SCS Engineers, former Chairman of EREF and Robert J. Riethmiller of PTR Baler and Compactor Company and the Waste Industries Scholarship Honoring Lonnie C. Poole, Jr., an EREF founder and Director Emeritus. Most recently EREF awarded the first Carl J. Apicella Scholarship, made possible by Carl Apicella, President of American Environmental Group, a Tetra Tech Company.
