Residents can begin combining cardboard and paper recycling for the same collection beginning the week of July 7, and continuing every other week. Beginning the week of July 14 and continuing biweekly, residents can place commingled plastic, glass, and metal recycling out for pickup, including #5 plastics.

Improvements to recycling collections are the result of a new recycling processing contract with Waste Management that was proposed by Mayor Paige G. Cognetti and approved by Scranton City Council at its June 24 meeting. 鈥淭he new recycling process will allow our residents to recycle more materials, more often. By simplifying our recycling process, we aim to increase the positive impact on our environment and reduce city costs,鈥 Mayor Cognetti said.

Increased cardboard recycling was the top request of Scranton residents responding to the 2024 Lackawanna County Recycling Survey, followed by opportunities to recycle more kinds of plastic. The five-year recycling processing contract with Waste Management accomplishes both goals and keeps recycling local to lessen the environmental impact of transporting materials.
