Residents now have a new way to reduce household waste and help the environment, thanks to a pilot composting program launched by the Kennebunkport Solid Waste and Recycling Committee with approval from the Selectboard. Two collection bins for kitchen scraps have been installed at the Public Works garage at 105 Beachwood Avenue.
The bins are serviced weekly by Mr. Fox Composting, a locally owned company licensed by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The initiative aims to lower the town鈥檚 waste disposal costs and reduce methane emissions from landfilled food waste.
Mr. Fox鈥檚 high-temperature composting process accepts a wide range of materials beyond fruit and vegetable scraps, including coffee grounds, paper napkins, corks, pizza box liners, and certified compostable plastics such as Greenware and EcoProducts. By diverting food waste from EcoMaine鈥檚 incinerator, the program is expected to modestly reduce tipping fees while contributing to healthier soils and a smaller carbon footprint.
