Sustainability is far more than a buzzword for Novelis; it is the foundation of the company’s operations, driving innovation to shape a circular economy. Novelis’ Latchford facility in Warrington, UK, stands as a testament to this commitment and a model for decarbonized aluminium production.  In February 2025, Novelis announced a successful test of hydrogen fuel to power a recycling furnace at its Latchford plant. The innovative trial, part of the UK government’s Industrial Fuel Switching Competition, demonstrated the potential to reduce the plant’s carbon emissions by up to 90 percent when operating a melting furnace by using hydrogen in place of natural gas. With this trial, Novelis has validated the practical use of hydrogen in aluminium recycling and opened the door to future innovation opportunities.  In addition, Novelis is investing approximately $90 million to double the facility’s used beverage can (UBC) recycling capacity, which is expected to reduce Novelis’ carbon emissions in Europe by more than 350,000 tons each year. Set to become operational in December 2026, the expanded facility will have the capacity to recycle 100 percent of UBCs that will be collected under the future UK deposit return scheme, which they believe will firmly place Latchford—and Novelis—at the forefront of sustainable production.  Through these advancements, Latchford emphasizes Novelis’ 3x30 vision to increase recycled content to 75 percent, reduce carbon emissions to less than 3 tons CO2e per ton of aluminum flat rolled product (FRP) shipped and continue to lead the industry to circularity through first-mover investments. By demonstrating what is possible, Novelis aims to inspire the entire aluminum industry—and beyond—and fast-track its own sustainability progress.  For more information, visit www.novelis.com.
