Mayor de Blasio announced Tuesday that the city will roll out single-stream recycling by 2020 as part of a larger plan to speed up the reduction of greenhouse gases.
Under the plan, New Yorkers will no longer need to sort their recyclables, 鈥渄ramatically increasing the city鈥檚 recycling rate,鈥� de Blasio said.
The initiative is part of a larger plan de Blasio announced Tuesday to limit global warming by 1.5 degrees Celsius as called for in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
Under the plan, all homes by next year will have a drop-off for organic waste and the city is working to institute 鈥渁dvanced energy codes鈥� for new building by 2019, Hizzoner said.
鈥淚n the Trump era, cities have to lead the way when it comes to fighting climate change. Hotter summers and powerful storms made worse by climate change are an existential threat to a coastal city like ours, which is why we need to act now,鈥� the mayor said.
President Trump has been threatened to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement 鈥� a pact signed by 195 nations to lower carbon emissions over the next decade.
He claimed the accord was a bad deal for American businesses.
The US emits more carbon into the atmosphere than any country except China.
