NWRA applauds the signing of the Colorado Battery Stewardship Act (SB25-163) by Governor Jared Polis. This landmark legislation, made possible by the dedicated efforts of a broad-based coalition led by Recycle Colorado and supported by NWRA, represents a significant win for the safety of waste workers and the responsible recycling of valuable battery materials.
The Act establishes a producer-funded, statewide program for the collection and recycling of small and medium-format batteries, significantly reducing the risks of fires at waste and recycling facilities while improving access for all Colorado residents. The new system, to be operational in 2027, will be overseen by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and managed by a Battery Stewardship Organization (BSO).

The coalition鈥檚 success underscores the importance of industry leadership and coordination.

As NWRA looks ahead, this milestone aligns with broader national efforts to raise public awareness and promote best practices in recycling. In August, NWRA will launch a national Public Service Announcement campaign featuring the iconic Woodsy Owl. The campaign will emphasize battery safety and responsible recycling, reinforcing the critical importance of efforts like Colorado鈥檚 new law on a nationwide scale.
