The Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste Management District recently received several top honors at the Solid Waste Association of North America Buckeye Chapter’s annual meeting in Columbus. The awards, presented Oct. 15, celebrate the district’s contributions, leadership and innovation in recycling and solid waste management across Ohio, according to a community announcement.

Gary Baty, OSS executive director, was named the James S. Bridges Solid Waste Professional of the Year. This award recognizes professionals who have made valuable contributions to the field of solid waste management. Baty has served as the executive director since 2020, overseeing a staff of eight and managing a $4 million annual budget.

Under his leadership, the district has navigated challenges posed by the global pandemic and local landfill issues. Baty has also spearheaded initiatives like the rebranding of the Aim to Be Green recycling drop-off program and the expansion of enforcement camera grants for township sites.
