There鈥檚 a new leader taking flight in the mission to clean up our communities鈥攁nd she鈥檚 got wings, wisdom, and a whole lot of heart. Meet Professor Olivia the Owl, the animated ambassador for litter prevention and smart recycling across Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg.

Created by the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board (R-Board) and partnering with Central Rappahannock Regional Libraries (CRRL), Professor Olivia is more than a cartoon character鈥攕he鈥檚 an engaging educator and community cheerleader who鈥檚 teaching residents, young and old, how to reduce waste and recycle right. With her signature spectacles and 鈥淲ise Recycler Rules,鈥 Olivia swoops into schools, public events, and social media feeds to spread environmental awareness in a way that sticks.

鈥淐hildren immediately connect with her,鈥 says Hope Mikelson, Community Outreach Supervisor for the R-Board. 鈥淪he makes complex topics like contamination in recycling simple and fun to understand. And she鈥檚 a symbol that this work matters鈥攖hat we all have a role to play.鈥

Through colorful activity books, school presentations, community clean-up campaigns, and even comic-style flyers, Professor Olivia is helping build a culture of care and responsibility. Her core message? 鈥淏e wise鈥攄on鈥檛 let litter multiply! One wrapper, one can, one action at a time makes a big difference!鈥

The initiative is already seeing success, with more volunteers joining clean-up efforts, increased recycling engagement in local schools, and broader awareness of the environmental impact of everyday choices.

As the region鈥檚 litter-fighting mascot, Professor Olivia is proving that a little wisdom鈥攁nd a lot of feathers鈥攃an go a long way in protecting our planet. Whether she鈥檚 reminding kids to rinse their recyclables or leading litter lifters into action, one thing鈥檚 for sure: this owl is on a mission, and the whole community is invited to join her.
