Mack Trucks is celebrating the 50th anniversary of REMACK, its remanufacturing division that delivers premium remanufactured parts while significantly reducing environmental impact. Since 1975, REMACK has remanufactured millions of components, transforming used cores into like-new parts that deliver the same reliability and performance as those that are new at substantial cost savings for customers.

鈥淩EMACK exemplifies Mack鈥檚 dedication to both customer value and environmental stewardship,鈥 said Richard Simons, senior vice president of aftermarket solutions, uptime and customer support at Mack Trucks. 鈥淭his milestone not only marks years of engineering excellence, but decades of keeping valuable materials in productive use. 聽By remanufacturing components to exacting Mack specifications, we鈥檙e providing our customers with cost-effective solutions while also making a meaningful contribution to sustainability by keeping valuable materials in productive use.鈥

Since its 1975 founding in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, REMACK has prevented millions of pounds of materials from entering landfills. The remanufacturing process uses up to 85% less material and 80% less energy compared with new production, making it a cornerstone of Mack’s circular economy initiatives.

鈥淓very REMACK component represents our commitment to quality and sustainability,鈥 said Rick Cape, remanufactured technical product manager for Mack Trucks. 鈥淥ur highly trained technicians, with an average of over 22 years of experience, use advanced technologies like electromagnetic crack detection, precision CNC machining and dynamic testing to ensure each remanufactured part meets the same exacting standards as new parts. This meticulous process not only guarantees reliability for our customers but also maximizes the lifecycle of valuable materials.鈥

The Middletown Remanufacturing Center (MRC), which relocated to its current 75,000-square-foot facility in Middletown, Pennsylvania, in 1980, serves as a model for sustainable manufacturing. In 2009, REMACK expanded its operations with a second facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, to support growing demand for remanufactured products. Today, both facilities continue to set the standard for sustainable manufacturing excellence in the trucking industry. Their environmental achievements include:

  • Certified landfill-free status according to strict environmental directives, ensuring virtually all materials are recycled or repurposed.
  • Supporting the generation of renewable energy for 100% of its electricity demand, demonstrating commitment to clean energy operations.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive recycling program that encompasses everything from metal components to packaging materials.

REMACK鈥檚 comprehensive remanufacturing process encompasses more than 25 different product lines, from engines and transmissions to coolant pumps and NOx sensors. Each component undergoes rigorous inspection, cleaning, remanufacturing and testing using more than 1,800 precision gauges calibrated to National Institute of Standards and Technology criteria.

鈥淲hat sets REMACK apart is our philosophy of keeping matched component sets together throughout the remanufacturing process,鈥 Cape said. 鈥淭hese parts have been machined together originally, and maintaining that synergy ensures optimal fit and performance while reducing waste. When replacement is necessary, we use 100% new pure Mack parts, including all bearings, seals and gaskets.鈥
