The Maryland Environmental Service (MES) announces that Ms. Sandra Hertz has been appointed as the agency鈥檚 new Deputy Director. Ms. Hertz was selected by MES Executive Director, Dr. Charles C. Glass, P.E., with the consent of Governor Wes Moore. In her new role, Ms. Hertz will share the responsibility of overall agency performance, financial stability, and strategic direction, while helping to seek new opportunities across the State.
Ms. Hertz joins MES from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), where she most recently launched and served as the Director of the Office of Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation. She has over 30 years of experience in transforming environmental challenges into impactful solutions and has been responsible for directing environmental planning and policy initiatives while integrating innovative technologies, often coordinating interagency partnerships.

During her time at MDOT, Ms. Hertz presided over many new initiatives, managed multi-million-dollar budgets, and oversaw a team of over 100 staff and consultants. She led interagency partnerships focused on innovating and streamlining environmental permitting, represented MDOT on national panels and state commissions, and coordinated with other states to expand environmental methods and outcomes for the state of Maryland.
