Some Statesville residents may be eligible for a 50 percent cut in the new solid waste fee based on their Iredell County property tax relief status. The new solid waste fee, approved by Statesville City Council on June 9, will be included on the annual property tax bill mailed to Statesville residents in August. For eligible Statesville residents, the annual solid waste fee will be reduced from $120 to $60, said Ralph Staley, City of Statesville finance director.
Those eligible are already identified as part of a statewide initiative called The Elderly or Disabled ¹ú²úÂ鶹steads Exclusion Property Tax Relief Program, which reduces the total amount of county-assessed property taxes.
Iredell County offers an exclusion to residents who earn no more than $29,500 annually and are 65 or older or permanently disabled. For those residents, assessed property value is either reduced by 50 percent or $25,000 – whichever number is greater.
City council members approved the fee reduction on June 20, but wanted to be certain that revenue would not be cut dramatically because of the recent decline in solid waste fee revenues, which is the reason for the new fee.
After the meeting last week night, Staley found that about 400 residents — or 3 percent of the total number of residents – would be eligible for the reduction.
