Food waste has long been a challenge for airports, with millions of meals served daily. However, several airports have taken proactive steps to address this issue. San Francisco International Airport (SFO), for instance, launched the 鈥淪FO Unites Against Hunger鈥 program, allowing vendors to donate unsold or near-expiry food to local organizations. This initiative not only reduces waste but also supports the community by feeding those in need.

Similarly, Portland International Airport (PDX) has been collecting food scraps for composting since 2003. In 2013, they partnered with Urban Gleaners to redirect surplus food from restaurants and shops to local communities. This collaboration has significantly decreased food waste and provided nourishment to Oregonians facing food insecurity.

The environmental impact of single-use plastics has prompted airports to seek sustainable alternatives. SFO implemented a ban on plastics in 2022, replacing them with glass or aluminum containers. Additionally, refill stations offering various water temperatures have been installed, and food vendors have transitioned to using fiber-based plates and cutlery. These measures aim to reduce plastic waste and encourage passengers to make eco-conscious choices.
