The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is again recognizing excellence in solid waste safety through its awards program, while expanding the categories being honored this year. The SWANA Safety Awards program began last year by recognizing winners in two categories: Best Safety Innovation and Biggest Safety Improvement. In 2017, the field will be expanded to recognize winners from each of SWANA鈥檚 7 Technical Divisions. Members of SWANA鈥檚 Safety Committee will then choose an overall winner to be awarded as well. SWANA鈥檚 safety awards exemplify the solid waste industry鈥檚 profound commitment to improving employee safety through communication, best practices, increased compliance with applicable regulations, and accident investigation and review.

SWANA has a strong commitment to safety and is determined to help move the waste collection industry off of the federal government鈥檚 list of 10 most dangerous jobs. This awards program, along with other initiatives, such as the Chapter Safety Ambassador Program and 鈥�5 to Stay Alive鈥� campaign, are important steps in that direction. Award submissions will be accepted through April 15, 2017 and winners will be announced on June 15, 2017. SWANA will present the awards to the winners at the ISWA World Congress/ WASTECON庐 2017, September 25 鈥� 27, 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland.
