The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is launching its inaugural National Student Design Competition. Created by SWANA鈥檚 Young Professionals (YP) group, this inaugural event will be held at SWANA鈥檚 annual conference, WASTECON庐, August 26-28, 2015, in Orlando, Florida. The National Solid Waste Design Competition (SWDC) is a team challenge that asks participants to solve a 鈥渞eal world鈥 problem faced by solid waste professionals. Through this structured activity, students will have the opportunity to gain industry-related design experience and be introduced to potential careers in solid waste management. 鈥淭he solid waste industry offers incredible and frequently overlooked professional opportunities for new graduates,鈥 says SWANA Deputy Executive Director Sara Bixby. 鈥淲e hope this student competition will demonstrate the potential for a robust career in an intriguing field.鈥

The SWDC aims to provide students with practical solid waste management-related experience and establish an excellent networking opportunity for students to connect with potential employers while attending WASTECON, the premier solid waste industry event. 鈥淎s a young professional, SWANA offers the connections, education and resources to enhance your position in the job field,鈥 says Katie Sandoe, chair of the YP Steering Committee. 鈥淭his competition, in conjunction with WASTECON庐, will offer students access to the latest technological developments and great industry minds at this premier conference.
