TOMRA Recycling’s WasteExpo exhibit #1779 will be a platform for show attendees to learn what state-of-the-art AI technology can do for them with GAINnext™ applications and PolyPerception waste analysis. Plus, they will experience the power of combining the industry-leading sensor-based sorting technology of AUTOSORT™ with GAINnext™.
TOMRA’s AUTOSORT™ integrates multiple sensors plus the latest FLYING BEAM™ lighting system that enables fast and reliable material detection by the high-precision near-infrared (NIR) sensors for high accuracy, throughput and purity in a wide range of applications. Its compact and flexible design allows for seamless integration into both new and existing plants. Optional TOMRA Insight collects and reports data via the secure cloud-based monitoring platform and turns AUTOSORT™ into a strategic management tool for fact-based decision-making.

AUTOSORT™ can be equipped with TOMRA’s Integrated Calibration Technology™, a new optional feature that allows for continuous real-time calibration of sensors to restore optimum signal quality. Integrated into the scanner box, the sensor is less exposed to external influences and provides long-lasting performance. The combination of all features results in reduced maintenance and high sorting performance that remain stable over longer periods.
Leveraging deep learning technology, a powerful subset of AI, GAINnextâ„¢ identifies previously difficult-to-classify materials without manual sorting. The true sorting power for many applications comes from combining the cameras and deep-learning algorithms of GAINnextâ„¢ with the traditional sensors of AUTOSORTâ„¢.
During WasteExpo, the TOMRA exhibit will highlight several applications from the growing GAINnextâ„¢ ecosystem. These include:
- PET Cleaner – combining AUTOSORT™ and GAINnext™ delivers high-accuracy sorting of opaque white packaging, textiles and foils from PET bottles to create new revenue streams. The system identifies and removes over 92% of opaque objects with titanium dioxide protection. Highly flexible, GAINnext™ allows recyclers to select opaque colors, opaque white, PET blue, light blue or transparent for classification streams.
- Deinking/Paper Cleaning – AUTOSORT™ with GAINnext™, a game-changing combination, delivers high-accuracy sorting of office paper, newspaper and magazines for paper sorting. Multi-sensor integration leverages deep learning technology to effectively remove impurities like pizza boxes, egg cartons and other brown boards from the paper stream.
- Aluminum UBC sorting – GAINnext™ instantly identifies non-UBC materials like food packaging, foil trays and aluminum bottles from the UBC stream for high-throughput aluminum recovery. Delivering up to 2,000 ejections per minute, the deep learning software identifies overlapping objects for high-precision, 98%-plus purity sorting, giving the market an automated process for aluminum can-to-can recycling.

WasteExpo serves as the North American debut of The PolyPerception Analyzer, which provides a waste analysis solution at key points in the sorting process to increase performance and lower costs through actionable data. Building operational transparency, every single object passing under the waste analyzer is examined in real time, and the latest deep learning models quickly adapt to changes in the waste stream and are updated regularly over-the-air.
The Analyzer’s powerful and easy-to-use platform brings more transparency into plants by continuously monitoring critical key performance indicators (KPIs) and providing smart alerts and automated reports. Access to images and videos enhances insights into the operation, radically boosting packaging waste sorting efficiency.
PolyPerception team members will be on hand during WasteExpo to explain the ways in which waste analyzing delivers values, including:
- Sorting efficiency – measure and optimize purity, recovery rate, yield loss, uptime and throughput.
- Commercial decisions – assess true material quality to make data-driven purchasing and selling decisions.
- Compliance – certify material quality to a specification mandated by legislation or waste authority.
TOMRA Recycling and PolyPerception invite all WasteExpo attendees to bring their sorting challenges to TOMRA booth #1779 during show hours May 6 – 8.
