Artificial grass has an impressive聽, making it a durable and cost-effective product. What鈥檚 even better is that most artificial turfs can be recycled, so there鈥檚 no need to worry about its environmental impact. Despite this, it was recently revealed that California doesn鈥檛 recycle artificial grass from residential properties. Thankfully,聽synthetic turf recycling initiatives聽are being launched. So, let鈥檚 find out more about responsibly disposing of artificial turf.

Is it worth recycling artificial turf?

聽You may think if聽,聽why should I? The answer is because it鈥檚 good for the environment. Many people buy artificial grass because it鈥檚 better for the environment than real grass. There鈥檚 no need to water artificial turf to keep it looking good. You also don鈥檛 need to use pesticides and fertilizers to keep fake grass healthy. The聽聽is lower than the impact caused by real grass, too, as it produces fewer air pollutants.

Check with your local recycling center

When your artificial grass has come to the end of its life and you don鈥檛 want to repurpose it, the first thing you should do is speak to your local recycling center. Some will happily take your old synthetic turf, but others may not. You鈥檙e also likely to have to pay to dispose of it. The York Daily Record reports that the average cost is $60 to $70 per ton. This cost is because artificial turf is heavy and takes up a lot of room. The recycling process is also complicated as the parts have to be separated and sorted. The company that installed your turf may also be able to advise on the best way to recycle it. So, if you don鈥檛 have any luck with the recycling center, get in touch with them. They may even pick it up for you!

Repurpose it

If you don鈥檛 fancy the high cost of recycling your synthetic turf at a recycling center, why not recycle it yourself and repurpose it? This is what happened to the old artificial grass at Beverly High School, Salem. The company in charge of removing the turf said it would be used in batting cages and mini golf courses. A few ways you could repurpose your grass include using it at a home gym,聽, making flooring out of it in a child鈥檚 playroom, or using it as an indoor or outdoor rug. Even if you don鈥檛 want to make use of it, see if anyone in your local community does. It could be perfect for a nearby animal shelter,聽 preschool, or a young family wanting to protect their flooring.

Artificial grass should always be disposed of responsibly. While your turf may have come to the end of its lifespan in your garden, it may still be good enough to use elsewhere. Otherwise, speak to your local recycling center or the company that installed your turf.
